The story follows Shankar, a taxi driver from Hyderabad, and his beloved sister Mahalakshmi, affectionately known as Maha. Their journey takes them from Hyderabad to Kolkata, with the singular goal of securing Maha’s admission to an arts college. Upon arriving in Kolkata, they encounter “Kolkata” Kaali, an unlikely friend who offers assistance and becomes a pivotal character in their lives.
With Maha settled into college, Shankar joins Vamsi’s cab company, unwittingly setting himself on a collision course with the fierce lawyer Lasya. Lasya cleverly involves Shankar in a charade, using him as a mute eyewitness in a case. However, an unexpected turn of events leads to Shankar’s words exposing the ruse, resulting in an embarrassing situation. Vamsi intervenes to protect Shankar from Lasya’s wrath, laying the foundation for an alliance between Lasya and Vamsi, where emotions become entangled in a web of vengeance.
Beneath the surface, a twist unfolds as it’s revealed that Maha and Srikar, Lasya’s brother, have secretly fallen in love. Their budding romance intertwines their fate with unexpected consequences.
Shankar and his fellow cab drivers are enlisted by DCP Yashpal to uncover the sinister workings of a notorious crime syndicate. As Shankar stumbles upon a case of arms trafficking, he draws the ire of the ruthless Bretlee and his henchmen. An intense confrontation ensues, with Shankar single-handedly taking on Bretlee. It’s eventually revealed that Bretlee is Shankar’s long-lost brother, separated from him in childhood due to a tragic misunderstanding.
Charles, Bretlee’s brother, arrives to investigate the escalating chaos, setting the stage for a showdown as Shankar confronts Charles and his squad. During this confrontation, Charles unveils his own tragic past, leading to an alliance between Shankar and Charles against their common enemy.
Lasya, in her pursuit of Shankar, witnesses these events, leaving her torn between her duty and her growing affection for him. As the truth about Shankar’s dual identity emerges, Lasya faces a moral dilemma that could alter the course of everyone’s lives.
The narrative also delves into flashback sequences that offer insight into Shankar and Mahalakshmi’s earlier life as the notorious duo “Bholaa and Maha.” They were feared enforcers of justice whose paths had crossed with Mahalakshmi’s parents, setting off a chain of events that would ultimately lead them on a collision course with destiny.
In the present day, Shankar’s loyalty to his newfound family is tested as he races against time to protect Mahalakshmi from Alex, the cunning mastermind behind the crime syndicate. A thrilling chase through the labyrinthine streets of Kolkata culminates in a high-stakes confrontation, where Shankar must unearth a shocking truth about Alex’s connection to his past.

Meher Ramesh’s “Bhola Shankar” tests the waters of Telugu cinema with its remake of the Tamil hit “Vedalam,” starring Ajith. Unfortunately, the film ends up testing both the audience’s patience and its own luck. What was promised as a commercial potboiler ends up feeling like a mishmash of three different stories, none of which are particularly engaging.
The film opens with Shankar, portrayed by Chiranjeevi, arriving in Kolkata from Hyderabad with his sister, Mahalakshmi (Maha), played by Keerthy Suresh. Their primary objective is to enroll Maha in an arts college. Shankar takes up the job of a taxi driver to make ends meet in the new city. In the process, he crosses paths with Lasya, a criminal lawyer played by Tamannaah Bhatia. Lasya’s brother, Srikar (Sushanth A), falls in love with Maha, even though her relationship with Shankar is characterized by a mix of love and animosity.
While the film attempts to interject humor into the plot, it also deals with a more serious issue in the background. Young girls in Kolkata are mysteriously disappearing, and thanks to corrupt cops, law enforcement seems clueless about how to tackle the mafia responsible.
The film begins by establishing Shankar as a seemingly naïve and virtuous character, but as the story unfolds, we discover that there is more to him than meets the eye. However, for those familiar with Indian cinema’s hero-centric narratives, the direction in which the story is headed becomes quite predictable. The film’s first half juggles between multiple tracks, with Meher Ramesh struggling to balance serious moments, comedic interludes, and obligatory song sequences.
The film’s second half doesn’t fare much better, primarily due to the lackluster writing that fails to draw viewers into the core elements of the story. This includes the plight of the trafficked women and Shankar’s relationship with Maha. It’s only towards the end of the film that a few scenes manage to redeem the overall viewing experience.
Meher Ramesh seems to indulge in fan service, peppering the script with dialogues that reference Chiranjeevi’s stardom. Unfortunately, these efforts don’t always hit the mark, and attempts to tip his hat to other Telugu cinema stars like Ram Charan or Pawan Kalyan feel forced. Some characters, such as those portrayed by Sreemukhi and Rashmi Gautam, seem to exist solely for objectification, and some scenes, especially those featuring Sreemukhi and Chiranjeevi, may leave viewers uncomfortable.
“Bhola Shankar” is a film with a lot happening, but much of it fails to leave a lasting impact. Mahati Swara Sagar’s music, which is subpar at best, doesn’t contribute much to the film’s appeal. However, Dudley’s cinematography does offer some respite by enhancing the film’s visual quality.
Chiranjeevi, as always, puts in a commendable effort to bring his character to life. Still, he can only do so much to elevate a film that feels outdated and devoid of novelty. Keerthy Suresh delivers a dependable performance, and Tamannaah, despite some dubbing issues, manages to shine in her acting. Sushanth A, Murli Sharma, Brahmaji, and other supporting cast members do a decent job, but some characters, including those portrayed by Tarun Arora, Sayaji Shinde, Ravi Shankar, and Shawar Ali, needed more depth to make a significant impact.
In the end, “Bhola Shankar” suffers from a disjointed narrative structure that fails to seamlessly connect the various elements of the story. The writing needed a more skilled touch to make the film engaging. Even the star power of Chiranjeevi and the talent of the cast aren’t enough to salvage the film from its shortcomings.
In conclusion, “Bhola Shankar” may leave audiences wanting more, as it struggles to live up to the expectations set by the original source material and falls short in terms of storytelling and execution.
